MR D.I.Y’s ‘我爱你 Wo AI Ni’ CNY webfilm touches seven million hearts

MR D.I.Y.’s Chinese New Year webfilm “Wo Ai Ni” is sparking a wave of love across the country.  Within a few days of its launch on Youtube, TikTok, Facebook, and Xiaohongshu, the film by Malaysia’s favourite home improvement retailer has already garnered over seven million views signalling its resonance with Malaysian audiences.

In the 5-minute 23-second film, a boy named Hong and his family gather for their annual Chinese New Year reunion in front of their grandfather's home. The strict former headmaster, who usually instils a disciplined, military-like routine, surprises everyone this year by being unusually demonstrative with his family. He gives compliments, discusses his daughter's mental health, and even joins in a trendy dance with his grandchildren.

Concerned about his odd behaviour, the family intervenes, only to discover that the grandfather has been seeking advice on love through an artificial intelligence [AI] programme. The film concludes with the grandfather explaining his actions and expressing love to his family with a heartfelt 'I love you all'.

Explaining the rationale of the webfilm, MR D.I.Y.’s Group Head of Marketing Alex Goh said, “This Chinese New Year, we want to remind Malaysians that the most important thing is love, and one of the simplest, most meaningful ways to demonstrate love is to simply say “我爱你 Wo Ai Ni” or ‘I love you” to their loved ones. It’s a phrase that holds so much meaning and magic, and immediately makes a profound difference to an ordinary day or a festive celebration. Our goal is to celebrate and promote love and compassion amongst Malaysians, recognising that anything is possible with love. So thank you Malaysians for supporting this webfilm. It means a lot to us.”

The website is available for viewing on MR D.I.Y’s official YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Xiaohongshu platforms. Watch the full version here: https://youtu.be/-YiYKz-Yf90?si=0P_gwv86EBJiqASb.

The webfilm is part of MR D.I.Y’s ‘Wo Ai Ni’ initiative this Chinese New Year, which also includes an “I Love Promotion” at selected stores nationwide, featuring unique festive decor items as well as discounts on a range of household essentials. The initiative runs up to 15 February 2024. For customers heading to MR D.I.Y. PLUS, MidValley Mall Kuala Lumpur, look out for the MR D.I.Y Giant Lantern and Wishing Wall.
