PAVILION REIT TAKES A SUSTAINABLE LEAP FORWARD WITH ITS FOOD COMPOST INITIATIVE

Pavilion REIT introduced Pavilion Loves E.A.R.T.H. with the launch of its Food Compost Initiative at Pavilion Bukit Jalil, an environmental solution for sustainable food waste management, furthering its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Pavilion Loves E.A.R.T.H. goals are centred around reducing Pavilion REIT’s environmental footprint through responsible resource management, carbon reduction and biodiversity protection. The Food Compost initiative marks the first under this platform and it echoes Pavilion REIT’s commitment towards the Environment, fostering Awareness, driving Renewal, inspiring Transformation, and cultivating Hope.

The Food Compost initiative complements these objectives by offering a localised, efficient solution to food waste management. By diverting food waste from landfills and transforming it into nutrient-rich compost, Pavilion REIT can reduce waste to a minimum and minimise its carbon footprint. This initiative is a significant step towards embedding sustainability into its operational framework.

Inspired by the success of the Pavilion Loves Sustainability Merdeka Campaign, Pavilion REIT recognises the urgency to address food waste challenges and is proud to introduce state-of-the-art composting technology to its properties. The Food Compost initiative will transform how food waste is managed, reducing environmental impact, and contributing to a greener future.

Key Features of Pavilion REITs Food Compost initiative:
Food waste is collected daily from Pavilion REIT malls’ (Pavilion Kuala Lumpur Mall, Intermark Mall & Pavilion Bukit Jalil) supermarkets, food courts, and F&B outlets.

The Food composting machine converts 1,000kg (1 tonne) of food waste into 200kg of nutrient-rich organic fertiliser suitable for all plants, and 800 litres of water daily - diverting it from landfills and contributing to circular economy principles.

The Food Compost machine is a self-sustainable machine powered by solar panels installed above it. The water produced by the system serves a dual purpose—cleaning the loading bay driveway and watering plants. This ensures the complete circulation of converting the food waste to fertiliser and water.

Furthermore, in proximity to the food composting machine, there is a water harvesting tank for AHU. This tank collects AHU water and rain water specifically for cleaning the loading bay driveway.

Present to launch this Food Compost Initiative were Pavilion REIT Board Members Dato' Seri Mohamed Azahari bin Mohamed Kamil, Dato’ Choo Chuo Siong, Dato’ Mearia Hamzah and Madam Baljeet Kaur; alongside Dato’ Philip Ho, CEO of Pavilion REIT; Dato’ Joyce Yap, CEO of Retail, Kuala Lumpur Pavilion Sdn. Bhd.; valued tenants The Food Merchant, Food Republic and MBG; partners and stakeholders – including representatives from Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Encik Sapuan bin Mat and Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Tuan Haji Zulkifli bin Endut, Director, Department of Landscape Development and Recreation and Puan Puteri Khairul Fathiah, Assistant Director, Department of Landscape Development and Recreation.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, we recognise the need to address food waste challenges and contribute to a sustainable future. Through this initiative, in a year, we estimate Pavilion REIT malls to collectively prevent 365,000kg of food waste landing in landfills and instead produce 73,000kg organic fertiliser and 292,000litres of water.” says Dato' Seri Mohamed Azahari bin Mohamed Kamil, Independent Non-Executive Director, Pavilion REIT.

To raise awareness, sample packets of high-nutrient organic fertiliser are made available to shoppers free of charge at Concierge Counter, Level 1 of Pavilion Bukit Jalil.
